Secrets of Rift: Hidden Easter Eggs and Rare Discoveries in Rift Online

Rift may be an older MMORPG, but it’s absolutely brimming with hidden secrets waiting for adventurous players to discover. From cheeky pop culture Easter eggs to hard-to-find rare items and secret questlines, the world of Telara rewards those who stray from the beaten path. If you’ve ever felt that there’s more to Rift than quest hubs and rift events, you’re right – and we’re about to dive into the juicy details. Grab your map and sense of curiosity, Ascended, and let’s unearth some of Rift’s best-kept secrets!

Easter Eggs and Hidden References in Rift

One of the most charming aspects of Rift is how it slips in fun Easter eggs and nods to pop culture throughout the game world. These hidden references can be easy to miss if you’re not paying attention, but discovering them adds a delightful “aha!” moment to your adventures. For example, there’s a tiny fishing village near Meridian where the terrified locals turn into fish-people as part of a dark cult ritual – a clear homage to H.P. Lovecraft’s Shadow over Innsmouth. And have you ever danced with an Eth? Male Ethian characters can randomly bust out the “Carlton Dance,” straight out of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air, when you use the /dance emote. Rift’s world is peppered with these playful touches.

Some other fan-favorite Easter eggs include:

  • Movie and TV Quotes: In Gloamwood, a panicked NPC during a rift invasion shouts, “I don’t have an App for that!” – parodying Apple’s famous slogan. Elsewhere, a quest involving ghost-trapping in Iron Tomb is titled “You Are Who They Call,” a clear Ghostbusters reference.

  • Famous Characters: An Alliance camp in Gloamwood has guards named after the marines from the film Aliens (you might spot “Ripley” and “Hicks” among them). There’s also a quest that has you kill ogres named Zap, Hod, Beeble, and Brox – put those together and you get Zaphod Beeblebrox, the two-headed character from The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy.

  • Inside Jokes: Even some items hold secrets. The in-game item Mudders Milk is a nod to the sci-fi show Firefly, and one of the Shimmersand puzzle reset buttons is cheekily labeled “Someone Who Chose Poorly” (a wink to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade). You never know where a reference might pop up!

These hidden Easter eggs don’t impact gameplay, but they give Rift a fun, human touch. It’s the developers’ way of giving a sly wink to players who are “in the know.” Keep your eyes and ears open as you explore – you might catch an NPC quote or item description that makes you grin in recognition. Discovering these little secrets is all part of the adventure.

Hidden Puzzles and Rare Loot Stashes

Exploration in Rift is truly rewarding – literally. Scattered across Telara are hidden puzzles and treasure caches that many players overlook entirely. Each original leveling zone in Mathosia has a unique puzzle tucked away in some far corner or high up in the mountains. Finding and solving these puzzles can be a mini-adventure on its own, often requiring a bit of clever thinking (or sometimes some tricky jumping and lever-pulling). Once you do solve a zone’s puzzle, you’re rewarded with a special treasure chest containing rare loot appropriate for that zone’s level. In other words, solving puzzles isn’t just for bragging rights – it can net you useful gear or unique vanity items.

For example, the Freemarch puzzle involves activating underwater lamps in the correct sequence in the Lake of Solace, while Silverwood’s puzzle teleports you through a series of towers in Overwatch Keep until you reach a hidden chest at the top. Each puzzle has its own theme and challenge, and figuring them out without a guide can be genuinely satisfying. Even better, these puzzles count toward achievements, so completionists will want to hunt them all down.

Besides puzzles, Rift’s zones hide other goodies. Treasure cairns (small hidden chests often perched in hard-to-reach spots) can be found throughout the world. These cairns typically hold a bag of loot that might include crafting materials, consumables, or occasionally a rare quality item. They’re a great reward for explorers who climb that extra ridge or peek behind a waterfall.

And let’s not forget the rare mobs wandering the wilderness. Each zone has a roster of rare named creatures that spawn sporadically. If you manage to find and defeat one, you’ll earn achievement credit and usually some decent loot. In some cases, rare mobs drop unique costume gear or companions that you won’t obtain anywhere else. For instance, certain rare undead in Gloamwood have been known to drop a stylish top-hat wardrobe item, and a rare spawn deep in Scarwood Reach might drop a quirky vanity pet. Rare enemies spawn on long timers and in out-of-the-way locations, so tracking them down takes patience – but the excitement of seeing that silver dragon portrait (and maybe getting a cool item) makes it worthwhile.

The key takeaway: exploration pays off in Rift. Whether you’re solving an obscure puzzle or stalking a rare monster, the game incentivizes curiosity. You might stumble upon an epic weapon in a dusty chest or a fun cosmetic item as a reward for your efforts. At the very least, you’ll earn some achievements and stories to share.

Collectible Artifacts and Unique Rewards

If you’re the type who likes scavenger hunts, Rift’s artifact system will keep you busy for ages. Those little glowing discs you find scattered on the ground are artifacts, and collecting them completes sets that can be turned in for rewards. Most artifact collections just give some coin or a lucky prize ticket – but a few special sets hide rare items as rewards that are truly one-of-a-kind.

The game’s developers got really creative with artifact rewards. For example, during Unstable Artifact events (a special kind of zone event), unstable artifacts appear all over the zone in bright blue color. Completing any unstable set awards you a Planar Nut token. Why is that exciting? Because 23 Planar Nuts can be traded at an artifact vendor for a Planar Squirrel Mount – yes, a ridable squirrel! Rift added six brightly colored squirrel mounts as a nod to the community’s love for quirky mounts. Collecting all six even grants an artifact that lets you summon a whole scurry of spectral squirrels around a friend (purely for laughs). So artifact hunting isn’t just academic; it can literally unlock new rides and fun toys.

Artifacts can also reward companion pets, costumes, and titles that you won’t see otherwise. For instance, a set called “Shiny Things” famously gave the title “the Magpie” and a vanity pet, while another collection might grant a unique wardrobe appearance like a pair of goggles or a funky hat. There’s even a series of Bounty artifact sets where completing each set lets you summon a hidden boss in your dimension (player housing) – defeat that boss, and you’ll earn special collectibles. It’s like uncovering a secret mini-quest from assembling artifacts.

To make the most of artifact hunting, keep an eye out for twisted artifacts (reddish ones visible only with a Quantum Sight ability) and unstable artifacts during events. These tend to yield the more interesting loot. And don’t forget to visit the artifact vendors in Sanctum or Meridian; as you stack up collectibles like Lucky Coins or Planar Nuts, those vendors offer some of the rarest goodies in the game (including that squirrel mount and other oddities).

In short, those seemingly innocuous collectibles all around Telara can lead to rare items and fun surprises. If you’ve got a collector’s spirit, Rift’s artifact system is a treasure trove of hidden rewards.

Secret Questlines and Rare Mounts

Quests in Rift aren’t always about following the obvious exclamation marks. There are secret questlines that start from unassuming items or remote corners of the map, leading to major payoffs for those who find them. One of the best examples is the Epic Water Saga – an extensive level 50 quest chain that many players completely missed back in the day. This multi-part saga has you delving into the lore of the Abyssal cult and venturing across zones and even into dungeons. It’s not part of the main storyline, so you have to seek it out (or stumble into it) on your own. The grand finale of the Water Saga is more than worth it: you receive the Crocnard, a unique crocodile-like mount, as a reward for completing the chain. A free epic mount for doing a hidden questline? Yes, please! Not only do you get a cool 60% speed mount (that matches your fastest unlock), but you also come away with a deeper appreciation of Rift’s lore and some exclusive titles along the way.

Another famous hidden adventure is Uncle Stan’s Fishing Pole and Lure quest. This side quest doesn’t come from any NPC with a marker – it begins when you fish up a rare item called Stan’s Tackle Box from high-level fishing spots. If you bring that to the mysterious Uncle Stan (tucked away in a corner of Tempest Bay), you kick off a quirky quest series that ultimately lets you craft Stan’s Super Secret Lure. Now, this isn’t just any fishing lure; using it gives you chances to reel up some truly wild rewards. We’re talking things like unusual cosmetic costumes, cute pet fish…and even a one-of-a-kind mount from the depths! In fact, fishermen have reported snagging a rare aquatic mount using Stan’s lure. The whole thing is a clever, tongue-in-cheek secret for dedicated crafters and explorers – a way to turn a relaxing hobby like fishing into a treasure hunt.

Rift also hides smaller secret quests here and there. Perhaps you’ll find a lost doll in Freemarch that begins a short quest to return it to a ghostly child (earning you a spooky vanity pet), or maybe you’ll click on a strange rune-inscribed rock in Iron Pine Peak that starts a mini puzzle quest for an achievement. During world events, there have even been secret quests that reward bonus loot or collectibles if you piece together clues (the seasonal scavenger hunts are legendary for this). These quests don’t announce themselves; players often have to notice a subtle interactable object or unusual drop to get started.

One particularly exciting category of hidden content is the raid rift lures and events that drop rare mounts. For example, the Sinister Tide raid rift (if you manage to summon and complete it) has a chance to drop the Cerulean Crocnard mount – a bright blue cousin of the Crocnard mentioned earlier. Similarly, during the Carnival of the Ascended event, a very lucky player fishing with a special lure could hook the elusive Knight Spider mount (a giant spider you can ride!). These opportunities are quite rare, but they add an element of surprise to content that might otherwise seem routine. You never know when a big boss or event might cough up a unique prize.

The overarching theme with Rift’s secret quests and rare rewards is that the game loves to reward curiosity and perseverance. If you hear rumors of a hidden quest or an unconfirmed mount drop, give it a try! The worst that can happen is you spend a little extra time exploring Telara’s nooks and crannies – which is a reward in itself for those who love adventure.

Tips for Treasure Hunters in Telara

By now you might be eager to set off and find these hidden gems for yourself. Before you do, here are some tips to help you track down Rift’s secrets:

  • Explore Every Corner: Don’t rush through zones. Take the winding path, climb hills, check behind buildings, and swim in those lakes. Puzzles and cairns are often placed in out-of-the-way spots that aren’t obvious on the map. If an area looks suspiciously empty, it’s a good place to search for hidden content.

  • Use Your Achievements: The achievement panel in Rift is a treasure map in disguise. There are achievements for finding puzzles, cairns, rare creatures, and artifacts in each zone. Skim through the zone achievements – they’ll hint at what hidden things exist there (e.g. “Solve the puzzle in Scarwood Reach” or “Kill [Rare Creature]”). These can guide you on what to hunt.

  • Join the Community: If you get stuck, remember that Rift’s player community has uncovered these secrets over the years. You can find player-made guides, forum threads, and even map add-ons that mark puzzle and rare spawn locations. For example, the Rift forum community compiled lists of Easter eggs and hidden references, and fan sites like CadRift and RiftGrate have detailed guides for puzzles, artifacts, and quests. Don’t hesitate to team up with others or ask veterans for hints – most are eager to share the fun of discovery.

  • Patience and Persistence: Some secrets depend on luck or timing. Rare mobs might not spawn for hours; artifact events come and go. If what you’re looking for isn’t there, don’t be discouraged. Keep an eye out and be ready to act when the opportunity arises. Half the thrill of hunting secrets is the anticipation!

  • Enjoy the Journey: Lastly, approach Telara’s hidden content with a spirit of adventure rather than as a checklist. These Easter eggs and rare discoveries are meant to be fun. Take time to read those item descriptions, laugh at the quirky references, and savor the moment when you finally figure out a puzzle on your own. The world of Rift has a lot of heart and humor built into it – experiencing that is the real reward.

By following these tips, you’ll be well on your way to becoming a true Telaran treasure hunter. Whether you end up riding into town on a neon squirrel mount, showing off a title that only a handful of players have, or just regaling your guild with the story of how you chased a dimension-hopping artifact thief, you’ll have earned some serious bragging rights.

Strategy for Rift in a Nutshell

If you just started playing Rift: Planes of Telara you probably want to know what the best strategy is for that fresh Guardian or Defiant. Unfortunately, there are not too many strategies available just yet. The majority of tips and guides out there are for beta content only and while the beta was pretty much release quality, a lot of things have changed since then too.

Now, if you’re a big WoW player the game is pretty similar to Warcraft with many of the same mechanics and a lot of similar themes, but if you think you can whip through Rift based on your WoW prowess alone, you’ll be in for a pretty big disappointment. So, you may want to get a strategy guide – one that gets you through the basics of the game, outlining what you’ll be doing along the way and showing you how to dominate your opponents in PvP and end-game content alike.

The best one I’ve found thus far is called Rift Secrets and it’s from the uber-prolific guide writer, Tony Sanders. This guy has written more stuff than you can imagine and the result is a collection of strategies and tips designed to help you build a bigger and stronger character that won’t be stepped on by anyone else.

If you’re really ready to start playing Rift: Planes of Telara with the best players out there get over to Tony’s site and check out what he has to offer in his Rift guide. You’ll be blown away by the PvP, Dungeon and other strategy tips he’s loaded into this thing and the ways he’ll help you get ready for just about anything that can be thrown at you. Stay tuned too because he’s working hard on major updates for post-release that go beyond what bet had to offer.

Here is the link for a rift guide that I can recommend!

Playing Rift On Your Mac Wiht Bootcamp Hack Guide

Just a headsup for all you Mac users out there asking about possibly playing Rift. Yes there does seem to be a fair amount of interest at least from what I see on the gaming forums about this. Trion makers of the MMO Rift currently do not have a Mac OS version planned but I remember reading somewhere they will reconsider sometime in the future maybe.

So what’s the best way to enjoy Rift on your Mac. Very simple, install Boot Camp which comes with every Intel/Leopard Mac system. Here are my quick steps to get Rift playing within an hour or two on yer Mac. You’ll also need a install disk of Windows, Windows 7 should offer you the best compatible experience.

Step 1. Go into your utilities folder and fire up Boot Camp Assistant.

Step 2. Go through the steps to partition your drive, I would recommend maybe a couple of hundred gigs, come’on everyone has terabyte drives now and you know yer gonna install tons more games anyway

Step 3. Boot Camp will partition your disk and ask for a Windows install disk, I used Win. 7 Ultimate.

Step 4. You’ll go through the whole Win. 7 system install process, installing drivers etc. and probably will need to do a few restarts too. If you accidentally boot into Mac OS just do a shutdown and boot up with your option key which lets you select which OS you want to use.

Step 5. If all goes well you should be running Windows flavored OS on your Mac now. If you have any problems this page will probably help you: http://klauskjeldsen.dk/boot-camp-imac- ... ck-screen/

Step 6. Now that you’re all good, go to Trion’s site to grab a copy of Rift, riftgame.com, set up an account, install Rift and splatter dah cybermatter

My overall experience playing Rift on my iMac via Boot Camp and Win. 7 is pretty damn sweet. I’m running Rift on an iMac 27″, i5, 4GB RAM, 4850/512MB ATi, via Boot Camp and Win. 7 Ultimate. I grinded through beta 7 with no problems to speak of. I have built my share of “Gaming PCs” too boot and this is pretty much the same. On the plus side I don’t have to have two puter rigs hogging up my desk now. I was getting around 40fps with various medium video settings and around 100ms latency coming from the So. Cal. area.
