Ascended Soul Preview: Shadeborn

Darkness holds many dangers, and the Shadeborn is one of them. We are offering it as part of the new Ascended Soul Pack, coming to Telara with Update 3.6; celebration of the Ascended. Explore the night with us, and get your first look at the Shadeborn through the pen of Captain Cursor.

The Shadeborn is a DPS soul that excels in taking out one or two targets. They deal impressive Death damage to the primary target and due to the sheer power of darkness, may hit a marked secondary target as well.

This deadly soul makes extensive use of “Bond of Night,” a mark that, when placed on a target, causes a portion of damage they deal to also be dealt this target. The core of their burst damage emerges from the talent “Consuming Depths,” which deals impressive damage over 3 seconds. Masterful use of Bond of Night and target swapping will increase their damage potential.

Visually, the Shadeborn’s trademark effect causes spikes of shadow to drive into the target, commanding forces that claw and tear.

The Shadeborn soul makes an excellent match with Nightblade, building on each other’s substantial Death damage. Many Shadeborn tools compliment the cleaving nature of Nightblade.

To Kill Aedraxis

Xavar closed his eyes and focused for a moment, calming his beating heart. He had been taught well by the learned sages of Caer Mathos. All things in this world are connected. A thread runs through us all; men, beasts, demons, monsters. Each one possessed a shared gift. The gift of death.

Xavar opened his eyes and assessed the smaller of the two mountain trolls, brothers that had been terrorizing this hill country. While the traitors in Zareph’s rebellion took up arms against King Aedraxis, the rest of the Mathosian Empire suffered. The lord of Granite Falls would normally deal with an incursion of these foul creatures, deal with them with a chest of gold. They would get no such mercies from Xavar. He stared deep into the being of the second troll and shared his Bond of Night with the monster.

With a leap into the shadows, Xavar made a sudden appearance in front of the larger of the giant trolls, and lashed his swords deep into the monster’s flesh. A great bellow issued forth from the pair of misshapen humanoids, as the wounds inflicted upon the larger brother were also visited upon his sibling. Xavar couldn’t help but smile, and repeat his mantra, “We are all connected by the great gift.”

The return to Caer Mathos was uneventful. The stable boy ran up to Xavar to tend to his horse when a string of large, cracked tusks tied to a cord was tossed at him. “I know you collect ears, boy, but the trolls didn’t have any.”

Xavar smiled at the young squire’s excitement with the gift, then frowned at the empty courtyard. “Where is everyone? Where are the armies of the king?”

“His Majesty has marched on the rebel stronghold near Ardenburgh, sir,” the squire replied, breathlessly, “His magician has finished the great machine – our king is about to become our god!”

Xavar wheeled about suddenly, almost knocking the squire over, and spurred his horse to fill it with the dark urgency he so keenly felt. The reins rubbed the brand on his hand roughly, and it ached more than usual. “We should have just killed that Eth sorcerer,” he thought, fiercely. But his contact within the Order of the Fallen Star had forbidden it. “You have not the power to kill that one.” he was told, “You would only reveal our presence.”

As he raced into the king’s camp, he saw that the ritual had already begun. Aedraxis stood in full regalia upon the platform, and that Ethian snake, Orphiel, was ready at the lever of his forsaken contraption. Xavar begged the gods and the destroyer to forgive him, placed his Bond of Night upon his liege lord Aedraxis and then began a dreadful slaughter of his countrymen. Aedraxis staggered back from the sudden and repeated assaults upon his lifeline, but it was not enough to knock him off the platform. With no assailant visible on the dias, Orphiel did not notice that this attack was even directed upon the king. The lever was pulled and the soul of a dragon was released upon Telara.

The world broke. Armies died. A mortal man ascended to godhood, briefly.

“What about this one?” asked the acolyte of the Endless Court, reaching out to touch the battle scarred bones of the old skeleton that guarded the chamber door. The necromancer frowned and glanced up from her tome of spells.

“Careful girl. I didn’t animate that one. Regulos himself raised it personally on the day the rifts came.”

The acolyte gasped. “Shadeborn-” and withdrew her hand.

“It was the last mortal to betray Aedraxis. Be wary or it will leave its mark.” The necromancer warned, returning to the ancient tome as she idly rubbed the painful brand on her palm.

Ascended Soul Preview: Maelstrom

Swirling from the mists of arcana, the Maelstrom offers single-minded, powerful damage to the Primalist. It is part of the new Ascended Soul Pack, coming with Update 3.6: Celebration of the Ascended. Continue with us as we take a first look at this soul, including a story from the library of Captain Cursor.

The Maelstrom is a single-target ranged DPS soul for the Primalist, focusing on burst damage and reactive gameplay. Using the elements of Fire and Water, the Maelstrom brings together opposing forces to vaporize and consume foes.

Let’s review some of the key powers of this new soul. Vaporize is a combined attack of Fire and Water that blasts the target for extremely high damage. Excoriate is a fire-based damage over time (DoT) that increases in power with every tick that it clings to the target. Blast Wave creates a pulsing area of effect (AoE) around the Primalist which knocks back enemies every second for a period of time.

The Molten Thresher is the Maelstrom’s spirit animal – what better way to represent the scalding power of steam and flame? We think you’ll really enjoy the sheer visual power of the attacks of this class.

The Maelstrom pairs well with the Vulcanist soul – double the fire from a safe distance. This soul also has synergies with Berserker and Dervish as well, due to its DoT skills.

A Maelstrom at Ovog

“Nothing?” Nertei the Maelstrom made a fist, cracking all her knuckles.

“I have nothing to give. There is so little water. My crops have failed, my livestock wasted away. I am dying of thirst.” The Bahmi was dressed in rags, his lips parched and cracked, and he was covered in a fine layer of dust. He smelled rank, and Nertei could see the trail his filth left as he crawled up the stairs of Ovog to beg some water from her cistern. “Please divine Maelstrom. You must help.”

“You dare to tell me what I must do?” Her beacon rose up from the ground, the opposed elements of fire and water spinning angrily around each other in a fury. “Who are you to tell me anything? Did you study at the gnarled and filthy feet of the great mystic Zam Nuuts? Did you endure his fetid breath and inane parables about Primalism? Did you have the genius to see beyond his visions and create a new path?”

The supplicant scrambled back from the imposing form of Nertei, as she continued to berate him, “No! You just come here and expect to take what is mine! My water! My power! And you tell me you have nothing to offer in return?” Her hands began to glow as steam was heated to impossible termperatures. “But you are wrong! You can give me your life! You can offer up your radiance!” Nertei conjured a bolt of searing plasma, reducing the poor man to a pile of ash, leaving only a glowing miasma floating on the still air, which healed and refreshed her.
As Nertei absorbed the radiant karma, she was overcome with the calming harmony that constantly tried to oppose her primal power. She heard her mentor Zam in her mind. “Calm down Nertei, fury is a tool, not a state of being.”

She briefly recalled the harmony she felt the day she was enshrined as the Keeper, when all of the Wilds came to Ovog to celebrate her. “Well they are not here anymore.” She thought, looking out at the courtyard where only a few wretched souls cringed. Too terrified to approach, too desperate to go anywhere else, even having witnessed her actions. She leaned back in the summer’s heat to rest, watching them through narrowed eyes.

Suddenly, the rabble began to scream and flee, jolting Nierti out of her reverie. “Why are they running? I didn’t do anything to them yet!” Then she heard the thudding footsteps and felt the ground shake Ovog, as a flame haired giant crawled over the wall.

Nertei smiled and drew herself upright, “Finally. No more beggars.”

“Nertei the Maelstrom, Keeper of the Wilds, you know what I have come for.” bellowed the giant.

“Yes. You are Teth. One of the demon’s many forms. And you want the radiance of the Wilds that I have taken. But you won’t kill me, I am far too powerful.” Nertei called her beacon to her side. She had been waiting for this.

“I don’t have to kill you.” the giant rumbled, “We could strike a pact. In exchange for the radiance, I could make them love you again.” The giant gestured at the fleeing people. His other selves had been watching her for some time. He knew what it was she wanted, or so he thought.
“Love? Fool!” Nertei called forth the water from Ovog’s mystic cistern, and began to drown the giant with it, shutting off further words. “I have no desire for their love!” Her spirit animal burst forth, a fiery thresher, all teeth and fury. Nertei launched devastating bolts of fire and scalding steam at the giant as it struggled to break free of its watery debilitation.

The giant struggled, lurching forward against the watery bonds. Just as it reached her, raising its massive fists to smash her to pieces, she detonated waves of explosions that knocked the Tenebrean back, leaving her far beyond its reach. She blasted the giant with a stream of fire and moved with the speed of flame to stand clear of the now panicking creature. “I want the same thing you do,” she hissed, “The Radiance of the Wilds. All of it! And you have all I need!”

Her fury was palpable, and every attack further fueled her primal magic. By the time the giant could get close again she had vaporized a few appendages, and excoriated much of its carapace. “No! You can’t! Such a waste!” The giant bellowed as it fell at the feet of the Maelstrom. It was not yet dead, but broken and powerless, in a huge, crumpled heap.

“Waste? I know the secret! Zam revealed it to me when he made me Keeper. But that old fool was too cowardly to even try himself!” The fire thresher had left her, and her fury was falling from her without the pain of her primal power to drive it. She struggled to regain her composure, and she trembled slightly. She just needed to take his essence and then a quick trip to Rhaza’de and she would be a god.

“It’s the secret to the Ascension Machine, why the Baac failed, but why you can operate it. It’s the radiance.” Nertei enjoyed her last look at the unnatural terror on the giant’s face before she ended its existence with a final bolt of plasma. She drank deep of the power that it returned.
Nertei tingled all over. She had been collecting radiance for years now, ever since her mentor Zam granted her the Radiance of the Wilds with his passing, but it had never felt so powerful, so present, so otherworldly. She felt… ethereal. The world swam before her eyes and she was utterly drained after her superhuman ordeal.

She felt herself collapsing, only to be caught by a pair of powerful arms belonging to her favorite initiate, the only one that never looked at her with fear. “Ah it’s you,” she mumbled dreamily. “I think I’m ready. Ready to ascend.”

“I know you are, Divine Maelstrom. We are prepared.” He handed her a water skin. “Drink this.” Nertei reached for the skin and gulped it down gratefully.
“Tastes strange…” Something was wrong. She tried to regain her feet, struggled to call forth her beacon, but the world was spinning, and she couldn’t focus. “I’m going to ascend…” Nertei sang out as her eyes went dark and empty.

“No.” Said the acolyte, dropping her to the ground. He held up his hands, revealing a brand of a fallen star in one, and blade known as the Raz’dara, the right edge of destiny, in the other. “No one who seeks to ascend will survive. Not you, not the demon. We will destroy all who attempt it.”

The ragged crowd had begun to refill the square, still traumatized by the day’s events, not knowing if her fall meant hope or more suffering. The sun set without an answer, but the cistern, now unguarded, was slowly refilling.

Ascended Soul Preview: The Frostkeeper

Ice is powerful. It carves mountains, makes the best steel brittle, but also becomes a remarkable protective and healing tool, in the right hands. The Frostkeeper is one of the new souls in the Ascended Soul pack, available with the launch of Update 3.6: Celebration of the Ascended. Read on to discover a few things about this ice-cold class, accompanied by an illustrative tale by Captain Cursor.

A healing soul focused on keeping tanks alive, the Frostkeeper merges magical elements of water and earth. the water in this case becomes ice, a keen tool when shaped by skilled hands and mind. The Frostkeeper has three different Barriers that may be formed around an ally to protect them from harm. In dire situations, this soul can also channel Eternal Preservation to save a friend from lethal damage.

This is a Mage soul, and mastery of Ice provides a distinctive frosted touch to the appearance of all abilities, including the targeted area of effect (AOE) ability Frozen Ground, which buffs allies while it slows enemies.

Frostkeeper can be placed alongside Cholomancer for a very potent healing combination. It also suits the Warlock soul well, allowing for easier charge management.

The Piracy of Ateos

Semeru, the new Prince of Shipwrecks, shivered on his Solace barge as the northern waves rocked his craft. They approached the secret Moonshade cove that contained the icebound Shi-Ming junk with some difficulty. Neither the barge nor Semeru was suited to this weather, and both found themselves creaking and groaning. He should have heeded his Uncle’s advice: “Kill a dwarf, take his coat.”

Five Kelari awaited him on the iceberg that trapped the ship. As he drew close, he noted that they were far better prepared, wrapped in brine lasher skin coats, with barr hoods fringed in rime. These were from a tribe that prowled the Sea of Ice far to the north of their tropical brethren and knew well how to survive in the frozen wastes.

Semeru disembarked with his servant, approached the group and extended both a smile and a hand in greeting, but the Kelari just looked at him blankly. The oldest one stood in the back, a tall, rail thin elf with icy dark eyes which narrowed as they looked over Semeru, judging him, and then spoke up. “Yah no is done mahn we be gunna meet,” he intoned. This must be Ateos the Frostkeeper, Semeru realized. His Uncle had described the mage well. “He says he doesn’t know you, master,” his servant mumbled in translation, huddled against the cold.

“True enough. But Uncle Hekeru has died of… an overindulgence, and I have taken control.” Semeru smiled even harder, and glanced around to see if his words would be translated back. The northern pirates seemed to understand him well enough, as they whispered to each other and then nodded.

Semeru took that as consent. “If you don’t mind, Ateos, please tell me how you are able to net so formidable a prize. The Shi-Ming do not part willingly with their ships. Where is the rest of your crew?”

The old Kelari began a tale of their attack upon the Empire’s ship while Semeru’s servant translated the pidgin into something resembling a coherent story:
Ateos shouted out orders as he placed barriers of earth, frost, and crystal on his warriors after they had scaled the side of the merchant junk. He then wrapped the archer Kaler in a frigid embrace of ice and wind that coated her arrows with ice, empowering her attacks.

The sailors were quick to raise the alarm and pressed back on their attackers, but Ateos coated his allies with ice, crystal and earth, binding their wounds and building up barriers that deflected the onslaught of the Shi-Ming. The five Kelari steadily killed off the crew of the junk, drawing blood with each slash of the blade, and each arrow that leapt icily from their tight formation. The defending crew fought on bravely, unable to comprehend how this small group of pirates was able to whittle them down. More often than not their weapons drew shards of ice and stone from the magically shielded combatants, and what blood was drawn was quickly healed by the spells of the Frostkeeper.

The ship’s sorcerer, desperate to defeat the attack, called forth a fire demon to attack the pirates…

Semeru didn’t think that was entirely accurate, sure that even a mage with Ateos’s reputation would have problems with such an opponent. he interrupted, “A fire demon! How did you survive a monstrosity so powerful?” he asked.

“Ain no tang kin kill a Kelari when I keist mah whammy. Dey will live, or succumb tah Eternal Preservation in dah ice.” The old mage smiled grimly and tapped the fire ogre’s ears that he had tied to a leather strap to his parka, and then to demonstrate, he froze them solid in a ball of ice.

“Well, I thoroughly enjoyed your tale of adventure on the high seas. I have your payment here, and wish to provide you a bonus, in thanks. Though I must admit that I expected there would be more in your band… no matter.” Semeru smiled his most ingratiating smile as he gestured at the additional crates piled near him, “This ship is a fine prize indeed – I am well satisfied with the transaction!”

The Kelari loaded them up quickly and silently, and paddled away to the horizon with the chest of platinum, and the bonus crates. it was hard to gauge their emotion, but to Semeru’s eye, they looked pleased as they left.

As they reached perhaps a hundred meters distance, Semeru gripped a golden dragon charm his Uncle had given him he dropped his pretense. The gold felt cool against the star brand on his palm as he breathed, “You had your master, Uncle. I have mine.”

The small Kelari craft was obliterated in a massive explosion. Semeru scanned the horizon with his spyglass. As the smoke and debris cleared, he spotted a lone iceberg rising from the water with a single form trapped within. “Eternal Preservation…” Semeru muttered to himself. His smile was rueful, calculating and genuine.

Ascended Soul Preview: Warchanter

Embodying the power of a voice imbued with deep magic, the Warchanter is offered as part of the new Ascended Soul Pack, coming with Update 3.6: Celebration of the Ascended. Learn more about what defines this soul, and explore a Warchanter’s tale by Captain Cursor!

The Warchanter is a single target healer for Warriors, specializing in the use of shouts and chants, balancing cooldowns to protect and preserve.

Shouts of encouragement bolster an ally – chief among these is “Stand Tall,” a long duration heal over time (HoT) that amplifies many of the other effects that a Warchanter can cast. To synergize with this they have Turn the Tide, a massive healing cooldown that converts overhealing it does done into a protective absorbtion shield. They otherwise deal Physical or Life damage when applied to an enemy target.

To incentivize their prowess in close range situations, Warchanters use Bond of Brotherhood, which improves healing significantly. This effect is doubled when healing allies within 5 meters.

The Warchanter embodies a rich gold and green tapestry of color that symbolizes the magical voices of power within.

The Warchanter pairs exceptionally well with the Liberator, providing additional healing and damage support.

Journey to the Depts of Hammerknell: A Warchanter’s Tale
Down, always down. Sometimes by choice, often heart-stoppingly due to a missed foothold, or a spirit leaping forth from those accursed rune vessels on the cave walls. The group of elven warriors had come to Hammerknell to end Dwarven pollution of the land, but nothing had gone right. They further regretted their pursuit of a rumored portal in the depths of the caves.
As they had feared, even the most innocuous healing spell could set off a damaged rune vessel, releasing the souls bound within to enact deadly revenge on their liberator. The expedition had quickly lost its cleric, and then, one by one, the rest of the expedition fell to attrition. Or fell into the depths.

As the warrior Tasoton reached out for a handhold, the side of the cave cracked under his weight and started an avalanche of rock from above. As he gritted his teeth against the pummeling of dislodged stones, a clear voice rang out in the darkness of the cave. “We won’t falter!” shouted Orleen.

Warchanter; that’s what the rest of the squad called her. She healed them, or more precisely, she enabled them to overcome their wounds. Whatever she was, they were grateful for her presence.

“Stand tall!” Orleen patted Tasoton lightly on his bruised back. His burden felt lighter, and her encouragement helped him keep moving forward, deeper into the ancient ruin.

No sooner had the party regained their footing then an apparition of some long tortured soul (space needed) began to tear itself loose from the rock wall itself. Tasoton struck out at it only to have the shadebound soul curse him, draining his very life force.

“Brush it off!” called out the Warchanter, who clambered over the fallen rocks to get next to the elven warrior. Her voice pushed back the darkness. Encouraged, he took the proper stance. “I’m with you!” Orleen’s voice sounded, as she drew her sword and stepped to his side.

The shade continued to uncoil from the rocks, screaming from its many mouths, its clawed hands swiping at the living, the many souls contained within its dread form coiled and knotted around each other. The remaining eight members of the elven party stopped in their tracks, their blood suddenly ice cold in unnatural fear.

“Get in there!” Orleen shouted, evaporating the clutching dread, “Nobody backs down!” The warriors halted their retreat and charged. The apparition’s attacks glanced off them, as if Orleen’s voice and faith in her fellows was a physical force.

“I am your shield!” Orleen called out and fell into position next to Tasoton. “We stand united!” she intoned, and together the two of them formed a challenge, advancing upon the abomination of a thousand tortured, runebound souls.

Time lost meaning as they pushed on through the dark crags of Telara, unwilling to return to the surface, to admit defeat. Deeper than any had ever thought possible, they came to an end at last, a point where the caves below the boundless quarry of Hammerknell ended. The massive, rune covered stone door before them astonished all in the elven expedition. Undaunted, and sensing they were close to their goal, Tasoton, Orleen and the others used a halberd as a lever. With massive effort, they manage to force it open.

A bright, white light poured through the opening, blinding them them all. But the air smelled of grass and forest, life and sweetness; the elves found themselves unable to resist. One by one, they passed through, their faces eager, joyous. Orleen found herself caught up in the lure of this mysterious portal as well. As she approached it, breathing deeply of the glorious scent of green, vibrant life, the stone door suddenly slammed shut with a thunderous crash, releasing a cloud of ageless dust that filled her mouth and covered her skin.

As the cloud settled and her eyes readjusted to the quiet, phosphorescent light of the caves, Orleen saw a hooded figure before her, his hand bearing the glowing mark of a star upon it, outstretched toward the door.
“Not for you!” commanded the figure, “That paradise is denied!” He laughed. (Cut this. The order of the fallen star is super serious business. No time for jocularity.)

Orleen let out a cry of battle rage and plunged her sword through his heart. The man, if he was a man, began to cough up blood, but smiled as he fell forward into her unwelcoming arms. “Your soul will wander these caves for all time, never to find rest. Never to find Ascension.” Orleen dropped him onto the cave floor in disgust and despair.

She was alone now. Her encouragements and wisom had brought the expedition to this point, through the most dire peril, but who would encourage her now? She sighed and brushed off the dust. (cut the ‘I’, all her lines are the exact names of her abilities.) “I Stand Tall!’ she whispered to herself, and began the treacherous climb.
